Exports in GCC

In 2022, the amount of sparkling wine exported in GCC contracted notably to X litres, waning by -44.1% compared with 2021. Overall, exports showed a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 141%. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sparkling wine exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 149%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates was the major exporter of sparkling wine in GCC, with the volume of exports recording X litres, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Bahrain (X litres), achieving a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sparkling wine exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -7.4%. At the same time, Bahrain (+88.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in GCC, with a CAGR of +88.3% from 2012-2022. Bahrain (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the United Arab Emirates saw its share reduced by -8.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest sparkling wine supplier in GCC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bahrain ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports.

In the United Arab Emirates, sparkling wine exports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.4% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in GCC stood at $X per litre in 2022, jumping by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 127% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre), while Bahrain amounted to $X per litre.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+3.3%).

Sparkling Wine Imports

Imports in GCC

In 2022, approx. X litres of sparkling wine were imported in GCC; waning by -16.1% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 103% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sparkling wine imports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, amounting to X litres, which was near 95% of total imports in 2022. Oman (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sparkling wine imports, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Oman (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates increased by +49 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sparkling wine in GCC, comprising 96% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Oman ($X), with a 0.9% share of total imports.

In 2022, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per litre, falling by -5.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sparkling wine import price increased by +28.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre), while Oman amounted to $X per litre.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (-0.3%).
