Exports in GCC
In 2021, exports of sugar in GCC soared to X tons, picking up by 18% on the year before. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, sugar exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +46.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) represented roughly 100% of total exports in 2021.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.
Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +8.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in GCC stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the United Arab Emirates totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+2.6%).
Sugar Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of sugar increased by 47% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +79.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sugar imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Saudi Arabia was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), achieving a 33% share of total imports. Oman (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +14.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugar in GCC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 27% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled -2.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (-4.2% per year) and Oman (+6.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per ton, falling by -28.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
