In 2021, after five years of growth, there was decline in the GCC non-mineral or non-aerated water market, when its value decreased by -0.3% to $X. In general, consumption showed a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Production of Non-Mineral or Non-Aerated Waters in GCC

In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated water production reduced modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 67% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of non-mineral or non-aerated waters decreased by -77.2% to X litres in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 364% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated water exports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 151% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Oman (X litres), the United Arab Emirates (X litres) and Bahrain (X litres) represented the largest exporter of non-mineral or non-aerated waters in GCC, achieving 90% of total export. It was distantly followed by Saudi Arabia (X litres), creating a 9.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bahrain (with a CAGR of +67.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), Bahrain ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 91% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +68.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per litre, with an increase of 166% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per litre), while Oman ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Non-Mineral or Non-Aerated Waters

Imports in GCC

Non-mineral or non-aerated water imports shrank notably to X litres in 2021, which is down by -19.8% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-mineral or non-aerated water imports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 57%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates represented the key importer of non-mineral or non-aerated waters in GCC, with the volume of imports recording X litres, which was near 61% of total imports in 2021. Bahrain (X litres) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Oman (X litres) and Kuwait (X litres). All these countries together held near 38% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-mineral or non-aerated water imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +4.2%. At the same time, Oman (+22.4%) and Bahrain (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Oman emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kuwait (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain increased by +7.9, +6.6 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-mineral or non-aerated waters in GCC, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Bahrain, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kuwait (+12.3% per year) and Bahrain (+4.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per litre, rising by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
