Exports in GCC
In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of wine, when their volume increased by 135% to X litres. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 83%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates prevails in exports structure, resulting at X litres, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Saudi Arabia (X litres) took a relatively small share of total exports.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wine exports, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012 to 2021. Saudi Arabia (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+9.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Saudi Arabia (-9.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest wine supplier in GCC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports.
In the United Arab Emirates, wine exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per litre, declining by -25.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre), while Saudi Arabia amounted to $X per litre.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+0.1%).
Wine Imports
Imports in GCC
In 2021, supplies from abroad of wine was finally on the rise to reach X litres after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates prevails in imports structure, accounting for X litres, which was near 90% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Qatar (X litres), Bahrain (X litres), Oman (X litres) and Saudi Arabia (X litres) - together made up 10% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wine imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +4.9%. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+5.2%) and Bahrain (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Oman (-5.0%) and Qatar (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+21 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Oman (-1.8 p.p.) and Qatar (-20 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wine in GCC, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bahrain ($X), with a 2.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 1.9% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, wine imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bahrain (+6.0% per year) and Qatar (-15.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per litre, with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per litre), while Qatar ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+4.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
