In 2022, the GCC wood chips and particles market increased by 10% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption saw a resilient expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Production of Wood Chips And Particles in GCC
In value terms, wood chips and particles production rose slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in GCC
In 2022, shipments abroad of wood chips and particles increased by 60% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United Arab Emirates dominates exports structure, resulting at X cubic meters, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Kuwait (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
The United Arab Emirates was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood chips and particles exports, with a CAGR of -5.8% from 2012 to 2022. Kuwait (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United Arab Emirates increased by +16 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest wood chips and particles supplier in GCC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kuwait ($X), with a 3.3% share of total exports.
In the United Arab Emirates, wood chips and particles exports declined by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per cubic meter, falling by -27.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 93% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kuwait ($X per cubic meter), while the United Arab Emirates totaled $X per cubic meter.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+4.6%).
Imports of Wood Chips And Particles
Imports in GCC
In 2022, supplies from abroad of wood chips and particles increased by 24% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 215% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 87%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United Arab Emirates represented the main importer of wood chips and particles in GCC, with the volume of imports amounting to X cubic meters, which was approx. 72% of total imports in 2022. Qatar (X cubic meters) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Oman (8.6%). The following importers - Kuwait (X cubic meters) and Bahrain (X cubic meters) - together made up 5.4% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood chips and particles imports into the United Arab Emirates stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Bahrain (+30.4%), Qatar (+25.2%) and Oman (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahrain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012-2022. Kuwait experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Qatar and Bahrain increased by +11 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood chips and particles in GCC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 15% share.
In the United Arab Emirates, wood chips and particles imports expanded at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Qatar (+15.5% per year) and Oman (+10.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in GCC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, shrinking by -14.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wood chips and particles import price increased by +24.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 86% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per cubic meter), while the United Arab Emirates ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
