For the fourth year in a row, GCC recorded decline in overseas shipments of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste, which decreased by -21.7% to X square meters in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 381%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, silk fabric exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 75%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates prevails in exports structure, recording X square meters, which was near 94% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Oman (X square meters) and Saudi Arabia (X square meters) - each accounted for a 5.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to silk fabric exports from the United Arab Emirates stood at -5.1%. Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Oman (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the largest silk fabric supplier in GCC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Oman ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in GCC amounted to $X per square meter, rising by 3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 130%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Oman ($X per square meter), while Saudi Arabia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Oman (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After seven years of decline, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste increased by 117% to X square meters in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X square meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, silk fabric imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates dominates imports structure, amounting to X square meters, which was near 88% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Qatar (X square meters), creating a 6.3% share of total imports. The following importers - Oman (X square meters) and Kuwait (X square meters) - together made up 5.1% of total imports.

Imports into the United Arab Emirates decreased at an average annual rate of -4.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Qatar (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Qatar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in GCC, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Oman (-9.3%) and Kuwait (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar increased by +11 and +4.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste in GCC, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Qatar ($X), with a 4.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Oman, with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United Arab Emirates totaled -4.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Qatar (+22.2% per year) and Oman (-8.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in GCC amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, silk fabric import price increased by +49.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
