The German abrasives market surged to $X in 2021, jumping by 22% against the previous year. In general, consumption enjoyed a strong expansion. Abrasives consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of abrasives (natural) decreased by -48.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a dramatic slump. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, abrasives exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 23%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for abrasives exports from Germany, accounting for a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, abrasives exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Switzerland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by France (X tons), with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at -24.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Switzerland (-12.3% per year) and France (-17.3% per year).
In value terms, the Czech Republic ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Switzerland ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for abrasives exported from Germany worldwide, together accounting for 38% of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Austria, Luxembourg, Poland, Spain, Russia and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 29%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average abrasives export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 61% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed buoyant growth. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+10.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2021, abrasives imports into Germany contracted remarkably to X tons, reducing by -25.4% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 175% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, abrasives imports fell to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -32.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Iceland (X tons) constituted the largest abrasives supplier to Germany, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, abrasives imports from Iceland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the Netherlands (X tons), with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Iceland stood at +5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+190.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+3.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest abrasives suppliers to Germany were Iceland ($X), South Africa ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, South Africa, with a CAGR of +183.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average abrasives import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Iceland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
