In 2021, the German animal fats market decreased by -28.8% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of animal fats and oils were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 192% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, animal fats exports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 92%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for animal fats exports from Germany, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, animal fats exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belgium amounted to +36.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+18.0% per year) and Italy (+12.4% per year).

Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight decline. In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of animal fats and oils, when their volume decreased by -14.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 100%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, animal fats imports contracted remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest animal fats supplier to Germany, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, animal fats imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), threefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.
