In 2022, purchases abroad of bananas and plantains decreased by -9.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Colombia (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana and plantain imports to Germany, together comprising 76% of total imports. The Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Panama, Cameroon and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Guatemala (with a CAGR of +56.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest banana and plantain suppliers to Germany were Costa Rica ($X), Ecuador ($X) and Colombia ($X), together accounting for 73% of total imports. The Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Panama, Cameroon and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
