The German barbed wire market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, rising by 9.2% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 186%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barbed wire exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 83%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), Poland (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of barbed wire exports from Germany, with a combined 52% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Ukraine, Belgium and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ukraine (with a CAGR of +69.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for barbed wire exported from Germany were Ukraine ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Austria ($X), with a combined 57% share of total exports.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of barbed wire and entanglements decreased by -0.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +47.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 56%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, barbed wire imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +34.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest barbed wire supplier to Germany, accounting for a 47% share of total imports. Moreover, barbed wire imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold. Luxembourg (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland stood at +50.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+0.1% per year) and Luxembourg (+5.7% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X), China ($X) and Luxembourg ($X) appeared to be the largest barbed wire suppliers to Germany, together accounting for 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, Belgium, Switzerland and France, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +93.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average barbed wire import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 21%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
