After two years of growth, the German basic dye market decreased by -27.5% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a resilient expansion. Basic dye consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, basic dye exports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Russia (X tons), France (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of basic dye exports from Germany, with a combined 37% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for basic dyes and preparations based thereon exports from Germany, comprising 28% of total exports. For the fifth year in a row, Germany recorded decline in overseas purchases of basic dyes and preparations based thereon, which decreased by -29.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 12%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, basic dye imports declined markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 8.6%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest basic dye supplier to Germany, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, basic dye imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), threefold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain totaled +8.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-0.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+26.8% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest basic dye suppliers to Germany, with a combined 49% share of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +30.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, the average basic dye import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+17.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
