In value terms, carbon dioxide exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Exports by Country
Switzerland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of carbon dioxide exports from Germany, together accounting for 72% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Switzerland (with a CAGR of +14.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, Switzerland ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for carbon dioxide exports from Germany, comprising 28% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Switzerland amounted to +20.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-5.0% per year) and France (-6.9% per year).

The average carbon dioxide export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 49%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+17.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
For the third consecutive year, Germany recorded decline in overseas purchases of carbon dioxide, which decreased by -2.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -21.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbon dioxide imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 73%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Netherlands (X tons), France (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of carbon dioxide imports to Germany, with a combined 59% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +15.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of carbon dioxide to Germany, comprising 23% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Norway, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands stood at +21.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+15.5% per year) and Norway (+4.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average carbon dioxide import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 25% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, carbon dioxide import price decreased by -7.5% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+19.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
