In value terms, smart card exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X units), the United States (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main destinations of smart card exports from Germany, together comprising 27% of total exports. Poland, France, the UK, Italy, Spain, China, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +45.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for smart card exported from Germany were Austria ($X), the UK ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 24% share of total exports. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, smart card imports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

China (X units), the United States (X units) and India (X units) were the main suppliers of smart card imports to Germany, together accounting for 50% of total imports. Singapore, Malaysia, Sweden, France, Thailand, Japan, the Czech Republic, Spain, Tunisia and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
