In value terms, smart card exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Austria (X units), the United States (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main destinations of smart card exports from Germany, together comprising 27% of total exports. Poland, France, the UK, Italy, Spain, China, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 44%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +45.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for smart card exported from Germany were Austria ($X), the UK ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 24% share of total exports. Switzerland, the Netherlands, China, France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +25.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average smart card export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 8.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card) increased by 2.5% to X units in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, smart card imports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X units), the United States (X units) and India (X units) were the main suppliers of smart card imports to Germany, together accounting for 50% of total imports. Singapore, Malaysia, Sweden, France, Thailand, Japan, the Czech Republic, Spain, Tunisia and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +115.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cards incorporating an electronic integrated circuit (smart card) to Germany, comprising 25% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by India, with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +9.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+12.6% per year) and India (+10.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average smart card import price stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 24%. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while the price for the United States ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
