For the third year in a row, the German trailer and semi-trailer market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 126% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption posted significant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer production skyrocketed to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports from Germany

In 2022, approx. X units of cargo trailers and semi-trailers were exported from Germany; with a decrease of -11.7% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer exports amounted to $X in 2022. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 47%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Poland (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Switzerland (X units) were the main destinations of trailer and semi-trailer exports from Germany, with a combined 36% share of total exports. Austria, France, Italy, Denmark, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Romania, the UK and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +9.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for trailer and semi-trailer exported from Germany were Poland ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Italy ($X), together accounting for 34% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +15.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average trailer and semi-trailer export price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+12.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany

Trailer and semi-trailer imports into Germany contracted remarkably to X units in 2022, declining by -21.2% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, trailer and semi-trailer imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Poland (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and China (X units) were the main suppliers of trailer and semi-trailer imports to Germany, together comprising 45% of total imports. Slovenia, Belgium, Turkey, Austria, the UK, the Czech Republic, Hungary, France, the United States and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovenia (with a CAGR of +27.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cargo trailers and semi-trailers to Germany, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Turkey totaled +24.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+14.5% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average trailer and semi-trailer import price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per unit), while the price for Slovenia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
