Dolomite Market Size in Germany

In 2021, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in the German dolomite market, when its value decreased by -46.2% to $X. Overall, consumption recorded a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, dolomite production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 83% against the previous year. In 2021, shipments abroad of chalk and dolomite increased by 24% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable slump. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Luxembourg (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of dolomite exports from Germany, with a combined 62% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Italy and the UK, which together accounted for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +23.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Belgium ($X) were the largest markets for dolomite exported from Germany worldwide, together accounting for 51% of total exports. Luxembourg, France, Italy, the Czech Republic and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average dolomite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Luxembourg ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of chalk and dolomite increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dolomite imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of dolomite to Germany, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, dolomite imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Estonia (X tons), twofold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belgium stood at +15.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Estonia (-8.6% per year) and France (+0.8% per year).

In value terms, the largest dolomite suppliers to Germany were Belgium ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports.

Belgium, with a CAGR of +9.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average dolomite import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Estonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
