Chewing Gum Market Size in Germany

In 2021, the German chewing gum market increased by 20% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Chewing gum consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 9.2%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chewing gum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of chewing gum exports from Germany, with a combined 36% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Denmark, Slovakia, France, Italy, the UK, Switzerland, Russia, Sweden and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 45%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +51.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), Denmark ($X) and Poland ($X) were the largest markets for chewing gum exported from Germany worldwide, together comprising 37% of total exports. The average chewing gum export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of chewing gum increased by 2.2% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 8.3%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

France (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of chewing gum imports to Germany, together accounting for 51% of total imports.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the price for North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
