In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the German market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, when its value decreased by -16.9% to $X. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In 2022, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from Germany reduced rapidly to X tons, shrinking by -55% compared with the previous year. In general, exports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the exports of hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres fell markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 45%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports of failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Switzerland (X tons) were the main destinations of exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from Germany, together accounting for 48% of total exports. Ukraine, Poland, the United States, Spain, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Portugal and Luxembourg lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +16.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ukraine ($X), Italy ($X) and Austria ($X) constituted the largest markets for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre exported from Germany worldwide, together comprising 39% of total exports.
Ukraine, with a CAGR of +20.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 71%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
After three years of growth, overseas purchases of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -28.4% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre to Germany, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Sri Lanka (X tons), threefold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled +21.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-10.4% per year) and the Netherlands (+13.5% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres to Germany, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sri Lanka ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India amounted to +22.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sri Lanka (-7.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+23.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
