Crane Market Size in Germany

In 2022, the German crane market decreased by -75.6% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption faced a deep downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Crane Production in Germany

In value terms, crane production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X units of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane were exported from Germany; declining by -4.7% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and France (X units) were the main destinations of crane exports from Germany, with a combined 32% share of total exports. Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, Poland, Turkey, Spain and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +14.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for crane exported from Germany were the United States ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 32% of total exports. France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, Turkey, Spain, Poland, Denmark and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Italy, with a CAGR of +17.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average crane export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 7.1%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Germany

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of derricks, cranes, mobile lifting frames, straddle carriers and work trucks fitted with a crane increased by 6.5% to X units in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, crane imports expanded slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +85.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 29%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

France (X units), Spain (X units) and Italy (X units) were the main suppliers of crane imports to Germany, together comprising 48% of total imports. Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Poland, Portugal, Belgium, Finland, China and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 46%.

In 2022, the average crane import price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per unit), while the price for Switzerland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
