Durum Wheat Market Size in Germany

For the third year in a row, the German durum wheat market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.2% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Durum wheat consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 17%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of durum wheat in Germany expanded modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 3.5% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 11%. The durum wheat yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for durum wheat exports from Germany, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, durum wheat exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Luxembourg (X tons), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at -9.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (-23.7% per year) and Luxembourg (+92.9% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for durum wheat exports from Germany, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Luxembourg ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the Netherlands totaled -7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Luxembourg (+77.8% per year) and Austria (+4.2% per year).

In 2022, the average durum wheat export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 24% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of durum wheat were imported into Germany; with a decrease of -34.4% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, durum wheat imports reduced notably to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +67.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

France (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of durum wheat imports to Germany, together comprising 63% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +45.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Slovakia ($X) and Austria ($X) were the largest durum wheat suppliers to Germany, with a combined 65% share of total imports.

Slovakia, with a CAGR of +50.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average durum wheat import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat import price increased by +65.8% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
