Grape Market Size in Germany

The German grape market rose modestly to $X in 2022, growing by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Grape Production in Germany

In value terms, grape production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, grape exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 19%. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Austria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of grape exports from Germany, together comprising 51% of total exports. The Netherlands, Slovakia, Finland, Ireland, Denmark, France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +27.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for grape exported from Germany were the Czech Republic ($X), Austria ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 51% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Slovakia, Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Belgium, France, Italy and Switzerland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.

The average grape export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany

Grape imports into Germany rose modestly to X tons in 2022, growing by 1.7% compared with the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 7.7% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grape imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Italy (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of grape imports to Germany, together accounting for 64% of total imports. India, Peru, Greece, the Netherlands, Egypt, Chile, Brazil and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
