After two years of decline, the German hairpin market increased by 35% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Hairpin consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Hairpin exports from Germany fell to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -9.6% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hairpin exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Poland (X tons), Austria (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of hairpin exports from Germany, with a combined 48% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, the Netherlands, Ghana, Belgium, the UK, Spain, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Switzerland and South Korea, which together accounted for a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +15.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for hairpin exports from Germany, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France amounted to +29.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-10.0% per year) and Poland (+3.8% per year).

The average hairpin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 48% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+26.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany

Hairpin imports into Germany stood at X tons in 2021, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 8.7% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, hairpin imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of hairpin to Germany, accounting for a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, hairpin imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), sevenfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+22.7% per year) and France (+27.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average hairpin import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 24%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
