Austria (X tons) was the main destination for iron ore exports from Germany, accounting for a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland (X tons), with a 1% share of total exports.

The average iron ore export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 54% against the previous year. Overall, the export price posted prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 107% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (-0.9%).

Imports into Germany
In 2021, purchases abroad of iron ores and concentrates increased by 18% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iron ore imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a measured increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of iron ore to Germany, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, iron ore imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Canada (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Sweden (X tons), with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands stood at +115.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+2.9% per year) and Sweden (-3.1% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of iron ores and concentrates to Germany, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands stood at +142.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Canada (+5.3% per year) and Sweden (-0.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average iron ore import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a measured expansion. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the price for Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
