Lentil Market Size in Germany

The German lentil market dropped to $X in 2022, which is down by -7.3% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In 2022, shipments abroad of lentils decreased by -26.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -12.8% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

France (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of lentil exports from Germany, together accounting for 50% of total exports. Hungary, Switzerland, Turkey, Denmark, Italy, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, the UK, Bulgaria and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +42.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest markets for lentil exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 47% share of total exports. Switzerland, Hungary, Slovakia, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Italy, Denmark, the UK, Belgium and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.

In 2022, the average lentil export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany

Lentil imports into Germany fell sharply to X tons in 2022, declining by -19.3% on 2021. In general, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 34%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Turkey (X tons), Canada (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of lentil imports to Germany, together accounting for 74% of total imports. The Netherlands, Russia, Kazakhstan, Belgium and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +61.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Canada ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest lentil suppliers to Germany, together comprising 73% of total imports. The Netherlands, Russia, Italy, Kazakhstan and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Among the main suppliers, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +60.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average lentil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 19% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
