Plain Postcard Market Size in Germany

In 2021, the German plain postcard market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, the total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, plain postcard export price increased by +37.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 43%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of letter cards, plain postcards and correspondence cards were imported into Germany; rising by 14% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plain postcard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. France, Switzerland, Poland, Vietnam, Austria, the UK, the United States and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +84.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plain postcard suppliers to Germany were China ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Switzerland ($X), with a combined 61% share of total imports. In 2021, the average plain postcard import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
