Lignite Market Size in Germany

The German lignite market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a mild slump. Lignite consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main destinations of lignite exports from Germany, together accounting for 57% of total exports. Switzerland, France, Austria, Slovakia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

In 2022, the amount of lignites imported into Germany dropped remarkably to X tons, reducing by -58.7% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 297%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lignite imports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 201% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
