In 2021, supplies from abroad of machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper making machinery imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 53%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of paper making machinery to Germany, accounting for a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, paper making machinery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Switzerland (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X units), with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Switzerland (+2.8% per year) and Italy (-13.9% per year).

In general, import price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years.
