Magnesium Market Size in Germany

The German magnesium market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, the total consumption indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 54%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, magnesium exports declined notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United States (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) were the main destinations of magnesium exports from Germany, together accounting for 53% of total exports. Austria, Italy, Poland, France, Uzbekistan, Brazil, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +178.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Austria ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for magnesium exported from Germany worldwide, together comprising 56% of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Sweden, Poland, Uzbekistan, France, Brazil, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain, which together accounted for a further 38%.

In 2021, the average magnesium export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, magnesium export price increased by +83.1% against 2015 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of magnesium increased by 7.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -27.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, magnesium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of magnesium to Germany, with a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, magnesium imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands totaled +21.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+4.9% per year) and China (-13.5% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of magnesium to Germany, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Austria ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Netherlands totaled +18.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+2.9% per year) and China (-12.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average magnesium import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 26% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Israel ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
