In 2022, the German mate market increased by 15% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a resilient increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Mate exports from Germany shrank notably to X tons in 2022, which is down by -18.8% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 133%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mate exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -34.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 106% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons) was the main destination for mate exports from Germany, accounting for a 78% share of total exports. Moreover, mate exports to Poland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Poland totaled +19.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-6.2% per year) and Italy (+17.1% per year).
In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the key foreign market for mate exports from Germany, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Poland totaled +19.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-2.2% per year) and the UK (+9.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average mate export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 26%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Germany
In 2022, the amount of mate imported into Germany declined to X tons, reducing by -6% on 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -11.2% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mate imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -5.5% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 71%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) were the main suppliers of mate imports to Germany, with a combined 96% share of total imports. Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 1.8%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lebanon (with a CAGR of +41.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), Argentina ($X) and Paraguay ($X) constituted the largest mate suppliers to Germany, together accounting for 95% of total imports. Lebanon lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 1.3%.
Lebanon, with a CAGR of +45.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average mate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Argentina ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for Lebanon ($X per ton) and Paraguay ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+4.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
