The German nitrogen market expanded slightly to $X in 2021, picking up by 2.5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. Exports from Germany
In 2021, shipments abroad of nitrogen increased by 9.5% to X cubic meters, rising for the fifth year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, nitrogen exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +123.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands (X cubic meters) was the main destination for nitrogen exports from Germany, with a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, nitrogen exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X cubic meters), fourfold. Austria (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands amounted to +8.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+59.0% per year) and Austria (-1.3% per year).
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for nitrogen exports from Germany, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Austria ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Switzerland, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Netherlands stood at +5.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (+0.1% per year) and Switzerland (+5.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average nitrogen export price amounted to $X per cubic meter, increasing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a slight shrinkage. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Nitrogen Imports
Imports into Germany
In 2021, the amount of nitrogen imported into Germany expanded modestly to X cubic meters, surging by 3.7% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, recorded a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 53%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, nitrogen imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
France (X cubic meters), the Czech Republic (X cubic meters) and Switzerland (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of nitrogen imports to Germany, together accounting for 77% of total imports. Austria, Denmark, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +37.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest nitrogen suppliers to Germany were Switzerland ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports. Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +34.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average nitrogen import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, rising by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 64%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per cubic meter), while the price for France ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
