In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the German nutmeg, mace and cardamom market, when its value decreased by -23.1% to $X. In general, consumption showed a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms decreased by -1.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -1.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

The Netherlands (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of nutmeg, mace and cardamom exports from Germany, together comprising 39% of total exports. France, Denmark, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Spain, the UK, Croatia, the United States and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 45%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for nutmeg, mace and cardamom exported from Germany were Austria ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 36% of total exports. There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms were imported into Germany; reducing by -14.4% against the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of nutmeg, mace and cardamoms to Germany, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Guatemala ($X), with a 26% share of total imports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Indonesia amounted to -3.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Guatemala (+8.1% per year) and Sri Lanka (+6.8% per year).

The average nutmeg, mace and cardamom import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -5.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
