In 2021, the German cyclic hydrocarbons market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Cyclic hydrocarbons consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Germany

In 2021, overseas shipments of other cyclic hydrocarbons increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of cyclic hydrocarbons exports from Germany, together comprising 63% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for France (with a CAGR of +11.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for cyclic hydrocarbons exported from Germany were China ($X), Belgium ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a combined 52% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, the Netherlands, the United States, Italy, Canada, the UK and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, France, with a CAGR of +15.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average cyclic hydrocarbons export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 22%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+12.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany

In 2021, overseas purchases of other cyclic hydrocarbons increased by 50% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +90.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, cyclic hydrocarbons imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +68.2% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cyclic hydrocarbons to Germany, accounting for a 49% share of total imports. Moreover, cyclic hydrocarbons imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+16.2% per year) and Spain (-2.3% per year).

In value terms, the largest cyclic hydrocarbons suppliers to Germany were China ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Belgium ($X), together comprising 72% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Singapore, India, Italy, France, the United States, Russia, the Czech Republic and the UK, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Among the main suppliers, Singapore, with a CAGR of +371.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average cyclic hydrocarbons import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
