Peat Market Size in Germany

The German peat market surged to $X in 2021, picking up by 30% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a measured expansion. Peat consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Peat Production in Germany

In value terms, peat production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -23.2% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of peat increased by 6.8% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, peat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons) was the main destination for peat exports from Germany, with a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, peat exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands stood at -6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+1.7% per year) and France (+1.0% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest markets for peat exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 43% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Spain, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Poland and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 36%.

Among the main countries of destination, Poland, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average peat export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of peat, when their volume increased by 8% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, peat imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The Netherlands (X tons), Latvia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) were the main suppliers of peat imports to Germany, together accounting for 71% of total imports. These countries were followed by Estonia, Russia, Belgium, Finland and Ireland, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Russia (with a CAGR of +36.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Latvia ($X) and Lithuania ($X) appeared to be the largest peat suppliers to Germany, with a combined 76% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Russia, Estonia, Belgium, Finland and Ireland, which together accounted for a further 20%.

In 2021, the average peat import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the price for Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
