Pistachio Market Size in Germany

In 2022, the German pistachio market decreased by -42.2% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of pistachios exported from Germany soared to X tons, jumping by 48% on the previous year. Overall, exports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, pistachio exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +108.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Italy (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of pistachio exports from Germany, with a combined 44% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Luxembourg, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Hungary and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +95.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for pistachio exported from Germany were Italy ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 44% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belgium, Hungary and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +86.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average pistachio export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Luxembourg ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of pistachios, when their volume decreased by -16.8% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, recorded a measured increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 70%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, pistachio imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest pistachio supplier to Germany, accounting for a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, pistachio imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Iran (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United States amounted to +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (-10.1% per year) and Italy (+1.3% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pistachios to Germany, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Iran ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United States stood at +9.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Iran (-6.2% per year) and Turkey (+24.9% per year).

In 2022, the average pistachio import price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for the United States ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Iran (+4.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
