Steel Railway Material Market Size in Germany

For the third consecutive year, the German steel railway material market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 5.8% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, steel railway material production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a abrupt shrinkage. In 2022, shipments abroad of railway material of steel increased by 14% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced slump. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, steel railway material exports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 9.4% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Denmark (X tons) was the main destination for steel railway material exports from Germany, with a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, steel railway material exports to Denmark exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), fourfold. Switzerland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Denmark amounted to +11.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+9.2% per year) and Switzerland (-1.5% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X), Denmark ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for steel railway material exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 31% share of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average steel railway material export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -5.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany

For the third year in a row, Germany recorded growth in purchases abroad of railway material of steel, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +29.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, steel railway material imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Austria (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of steel railway material imports to Germany, with a combined 92% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Austria (with a CAGR of +16.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), Poland ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) appeared to be the largest steel railway material suppliers to Germany, together comprising 84% of total imports.
