Paddy Rice Market Size in Germany

The German paddy rice market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. Paddy rice consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paddy rice exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a mild setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for paddy rice exports from Germany, accounting for a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, paddy rice exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tons), threefold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria totaled -1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-19.9% per year) and Italy (+27.7% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for paddy rice exports from Germany, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria totaled -3.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+45.7% per year) and France (-10.1% per year).

In 2022, the average paddy rice export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -14.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paddy rice export price increased by +62.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+12.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of paddy rice, when their volume increased by 12% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a perceptible decrease. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 17%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest paddy rice supplier to Germany, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, paddy rice imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), eightfold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy stood at -4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-5.2% per year) and Hungary (+6.6% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Germany, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy totaled -3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (-4.4% per year) and Hungary (+12.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average paddy rice import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 14%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
