Rum Market Size in Germany
The German rum market dropped to $X in 2022, declining by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. In value terms, rum exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X litres), the Netherlands (X litres) and Austria (X litres) were the main destinations of rum exports from Germany, with a combined 34% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Italy, Poland, Denmark, Spain, Romania, Switzerland, France, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Croatia, which together accounted for a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Romania (with a CAGR of +17.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for rum exported from Germany were the Netherlands ($X), Austria ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 37% share of total exports. Denmark, Spain, Italy, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Poland, France, Romania and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
Among the main countries of destination, Croatia, with a CAGR of +13.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average rum export price amounted to $X per litre, shrinking by -13.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 25%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Croatia ($X per litre), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2022, supplies from abroad of rum increased by 11% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, rum imports shrank slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Spain (X litres), Italy (X litres) and France (X litres) were the main suppliers of rum imports to Germany, with a combined 47% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Swaziland, Brazil, Jamaica, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Central African Republic, Cuba and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 44%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Central African Republic (with a CAGR of +500.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Spain ($X), Italy ($X) and Guatemala ($X) constituted the largest rum suppliers to Germany, together accounting for 47% of total imports. France, Venezuela, the Netherlands, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cuba, Brazil, Swaziland, Poland and Central African Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Central African Republic, with a CAGR of +230.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average rum import price stood at $X per litre in 2022, waning by -12.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per litre), while the price for Central African Republic ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
