In 2021, the German saccharin market increased by 14% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption saw mild growth. Saccharin consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, exports of saccharin and its salts from Germany expanded notably to X tons, picking up by 14% on 2020 figures. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, saccharin exports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Poland (X tons), Canada (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of saccharin exports from Germany, with a combined 31% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Canada (with a CAGR of +386.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Poland ($X), Italy ($X) and Slovakia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for saccharin exported from Germany worldwide, together accounting for 33% of total exports. These countries were followed by Canada, France, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, the UK, Belgium, Guatemala, Slovenia and Austria, which together accounted for a further 40%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Canada, with a CAGR of +289.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average saccharin export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2021, approx. X tons of saccharin and its salts were imported into Germany; rising by 17% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, saccharin imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +17.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest saccharin supplier to Germany, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, saccharin imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by South Korea (X tons), with a 4.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -1.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+62.4% per year) and South Korea (+13.1% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of saccharin and its salts to Germany, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled +1.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+14.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+50.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average saccharin import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
