Sailboat Market Size in Germany

In 2021, the German sailboat market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a notable expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Sailboat Production in Germany

In value terms, sailboat production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -32.5% against 2017 indices. In 2021, overseas shipments of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor increased by 29% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sailboat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 98% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Turkey (X units), the UK (X units) and Switzerland (X units) were the main destinations of sailboat exports from Germany, together comprising 32% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, France, the United States, Hungary, Italy, Croatia, Sweden, Greece, Australia and Spain, which together accounted for a further 48%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +21.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), the United States ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest markets for sailboat exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 36% share of total exports. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2021, purchases abroad of sailboats for pleasure or sports, with or without auxiliary motor increased by 27% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 253%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sailboat imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X units) constituted the largest supplier of sailboat to Germany, with a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, sailboat imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X units), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Switzerland (X units), with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland totaled +26.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (+32.6% per year) and Switzerland (+12.3% per year).

The average sailboat import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 62% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
