Sesame Seed Market Size in Germany

After five years of growth, the German sesame seed market decreased by -23.2% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Sesame seed consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In general, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 33%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, sesame seed exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Austria (X tons), France (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of sesame seed exports from Germany, together accounting for 49% of total exports. Denmark, Italy, Poland, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, Norway and Finland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Finland (with a CAGR of +39.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest markets for sesame seed exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 48% share of total exports. In 2022, the average sesame seed export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Norway ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) and Austria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany

In 2022, overseas purchases of sesame seed decreased by -27.3% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 10%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, sesame seed imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria (X tons), India (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the main suppliers of sesame seed imports to Germany, together comprising 35% of total imports.
