Shelled Hazelnut Market Size in Germany
In 2021, the German shelled hazelnut market increased by 12% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In 2021, overseas shipments of shelled hazelnuts increased by 1.1% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +37.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 43%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Belgium (X tons), Austria (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main destinations of shelled hazelnut exports from Germany, together accounting for 60% of total exports. France, Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +16.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Austria ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest markets for shelled hazelnut exported from Germany worldwide, with a combined 60% share of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Poland, Spain, the Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 33%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Spain, with a CAGR of +19.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average shelled hazelnut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2021, approx. X tons of shelled hazelnuts were imported into Germany; rising by 7.2% compared with 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +36.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest shelled hazelnut supplier to Germany, accounting for a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, shelled hazelnut imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. Georgia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+12.1% per year) and Georgia (+10.0% per year).
In value terms, the largest shelled hazelnut suppliers to Germany were Turkey ($X), Italy ($X) and Chile ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Chile, with a CAGR of +142.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average shelled hazelnut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the price for Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+11.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
