The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Switzerland (X tons) was the main destination for sugars exports from Germany, accounting for a 20% share of total exports. Moreover, sugars exports to Switzerland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), twofold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.

These countries were followed by Italy, China, France, Spain, Japan, the UK, the Czech Republic, Canada, Russia and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 40%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +22.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average sugars export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2021, supplies from abroad of sugars, sugar ethers and salts increased by 69% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +75.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sugars imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main suppliers of sugars imports to Germany, together comprising 55% of total imports. The Netherlands, France, Poland, Spain, Japan and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of +150.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), China ($X) and Spain ($X) constituted the largest sugars suppliers to Germany, with a combined 56% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Japan and Italy, which together accounted for a further 34%.

In general, import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sugars import price increased by +92.2% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+29.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
