Tea Market Size in Germany
In 2022, the German tea market increased by 19% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Tea consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the third consecutive year, Germany recorded decline in shipments abroad of tea, which decreased by -5.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tea exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), France (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of tea exports from Germany, together comprising 49% of total exports. Spain, Austria, Italy, Morocco, Denmark, the UK, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Sweden lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Morocco (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, France ($X), the United States ($X) and Poland ($X) were the largest markets for tea exported from Germany worldwide, together comprising 46% of total exports. Spain, Morocco, the Netherlands, the UK, Denmark, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Morocco, with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average tea export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2022, overseas purchases of tea were finally on the rise to reach X tons after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tea imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China (X tons), India (X tons) and Sri Lanka (X tons) were the main suppliers of tea imports to Germany, with a combined 63% share of total imports. Argentina, Malawi, Indonesia, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, the Netherlands, Iran, Vietnam and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +58.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tea suppliers to Germany were China ($X), India ($X) and Sri Lanka ($X), with a combined 72% share of total imports. Argentina, Malawi, Kenya, Indonesia, Rwanda, Mozambique, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Iran and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.
Among the main suppliers, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +61.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average tea import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 17%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Malawi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+9.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
