In 2021, the German passenger car tyre market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a perceptible increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Germany
In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of tyres for motor cars, when their volume increased by 9.3% to X units. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, passenger car tyre exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight downturn. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
France (X units) was the main destination for passenger car tyre exports from Germany, with a 15% share of total exports. Moreover, passenger car tyre exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X units), twofold. The UK (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to France totaled -4.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (-9.7% per year) and the UK (-9.6% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for passenger car tyre exported from Germany were France ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Switzerland ($X), together accounting for 28% of total exports. These countries were followed by Austria, Italy, the United States, Poland, the UK, Spain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Denmark, which together accounted for a further 46%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +12.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average passenger car tyre export price amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, passenger car tyre export price increased by +118.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the Czech Republic ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+8.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Germany
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of tyres for motor cars, when their volume increased by 10% to X units. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 11%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, passenger car tyre imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild decrease. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Poland (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and Romania (X units) were the main suppliers of passenger car tyre imports to Germany, together comprising 28% of total imports. The Czech Republic, China, Hungary, France, Spain, South Korea, Belgium, Turkey, Portugal and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 53%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +7.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest passenger car tyre suppliers to Germany were the Netherlands ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 29% of total imports. These countries were followed by Romania, France, Hungary, China, Portugal, South Korea, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 52%.
In terms of the main suppliers, South Korea, with a CAGR of +5.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average passenger car tyre import price amounted to $X per unit, growing by 4.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 8.1%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while the price for China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
