Almond Market Size in Ghana

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the Ghanian almond market, when its value decreased by -91.2% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption showed a sharp contraction. Almond consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of almonds decreased by -92.8% to X kg in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 196% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, almond imports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 192%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United Arab Emirates (X kg) constituted the largest almond supplier to Ghana, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, almond imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X kg), more than tenfold. The United States (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+2.9% per year) and the United States (-38.8% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of almond to Ghana, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +8.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-31.6% per year) and South Africa (+6.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average almond import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 59% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 96% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+19.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
