The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 8.6%. After six years of growth, overseas shipments of bananas and plantains decreased by -15.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, banana and plantain exports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
France (X tons), the UK (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main destinations of banana and plantain exports from Ghana, together accounting for 73% of total exports. Burkina Faso, Italy, Senegal, Niger, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +79.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for banana and plantain exported from Ghana were France ($X), the UK ($X) and Spain ($X), with a combined 84% share of total exports. Italy, Senegal, the Czech Republic, Burkina Faso, Slovakia, Belgium and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 12%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +65.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average banana and plantain export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -7.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 17% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Ghana
In 2022, overseas purchases of bananas and plantains decreased by -16.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 176%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 183% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons), the UK (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana and plantain imports to Ghana, with a combined 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the United States (with a CAGR of +204.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest banana and plantain suppliers to Ghana, together comprising 100% of total imports.
The United States, with a CAGR of +182.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average banana and plantain import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a abrupt slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 68% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
