Cashew Nut Market Size in Ghana

In 2021, the Ghanian cashew nut market increased by 472% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, consumption saw a pronounced increase. Cashew nut consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 92%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of cashew nuts in Ghana reduced modestly to X tons per ha in 2021, which is down by -2.1% on 2020. In general, the yield continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 16%. The cashew nut yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of cashew nuts were harvested in Ghana; surging by 1.9% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 67%. The cashew nut harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of cashew nuts decreased by -54.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cashew nut exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Vietnam (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main destinations of cashew nut exports from Ghana.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Vietnam (with a CAGR of +13.5%).

In value terms, the largest markets for cashew nut exported from Ghana were Vietnam ($X) and India ($X).

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +11.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review.

The average cashew nut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (-1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
