Cassava Market Size in Ghana

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Ghanian cassava market, when its value decreased by less than 0.1% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Cassava consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Cassava Production in Ghana

In value terms, cassava production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 127%. Cassava production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the average yield of cassava in Ghana shrank modestly to X tons per ha, stabilizing at 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average cassava yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year. Exports from Ghana

In 2022, overseas shipments of cassava were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 144%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cassava exports contracted slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for cassava exports from Ghana, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, cassava exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X tons), more than tenfold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at -1.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+14.5% per year) and the Netherlands (-27.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for cassava exports from Ghana, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 3.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to the United States totaled -3.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+0.6% per year) and the UK (-24.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cassava export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 128% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Ghana

In 2022, supplies from abroad of cassava was finally on the rise to reach X kg after three years of decline. Overall, imports showed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 533% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X kg in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cassava imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 357% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Egypt (X kg) was the main supplier of cassava to Ghana, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Egypt stood at +55.7%.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cassava to Ghana.

In 2022, the average cassava import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Egypt.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Egypt amounted to -8.9% per year.
