Mali (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Niger (X tons) were the main destinations of caustic soda exports from Ghana, together accounting for 85% of total exports.

In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the key foreign market for caustic soda exports from Ghana, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Mali stood at +179.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+2.4% per year) and Niger (+109.1% per year).

In 2021, the average caustic soda export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 40% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, approx. X tons of caustic soda were imported into Ghana; reducing by -22.2% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +43.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined significantly in the following year.
In value terms, caustic soda imports fell significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +24.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest caustic soda supplier to Ghana, accounting for a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, caustic soda imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia (X tons), with an 8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+16.1% per year) and Saudi Arabia (+12.4% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of caustic soda to Ghana, comprising 32% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saudi Arabia ($X), with a 9.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Kuwait, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China totaled -3.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saudi Arabia (+7.1% per year) and Kuwait (+37.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average caustic soda import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+24.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
