Exports from Ghana

In 2022, approx. X kg of cheese and curd were exported from Ghana; shrinking by -2.9% against the year before. Overall, exports showed a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 131%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cheese and curd exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports faced a significant curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 446%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Burkina Faso (X kg) was the main destination for cheese and curd exports from Ghana, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese and curd exports to Burkina Faso exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Luxembourg (X kg), threefold. Togo (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Burkina Faso amounted to -23.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Luxembourg (-29.8% per year) and Togo (-26.5% per year).

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the key foreign market for cheese and curd exports from Ghana, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Luxembourg, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Togo stood at -14.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (-15.5% per year) and Luxembourg (-29.4% per year).

The average cheese and curd export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -10% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 136%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Ghana

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of cheese and curd decreased by -9.1% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 26%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, cheese and curd imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 41%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

France (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of cheese and curd imports to Ghana, with a combined 55% share of total imports. Turkey, Italy, Brazil, the Netherlands, the UK, Poland, Spain, Greece, Germany and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +31.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X), Denmark ($X) and Belgium ($X) constituted the largest cheese and curd suppliers to Ghana, with a combined 54% share of total imports. The Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, Brazil, Germany, the UK, Poland, Spain, Greece and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Among the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +33.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average cheese and curd import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
