The number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in Ghana reached X heads in 2021, picking up by 2.2% on the previous year. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Exports from Ghana
In 2021, overseas shipments of chicken meat increased by 5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 157% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chicken meat exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Togo (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) were the main destinations of chicken meat exports from Ghana.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of -2.3%).
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the key foreign market for chicken meat exports from Ghana, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 32% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Cote d'Ivoire amounted to -6.7%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average chicken meat export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Benin (+18.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Chicken Meat Imports
Imports into Ghana
After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of chicken meat decreased by -40% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, chicken meat imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
The United States (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to Ghana, with a combined 37% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of +47.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Poland ($X) and Brazil ($X) appeared to be the largest chicken meat suppliers to Ghana, with a combined 38% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +40.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
The average chicken meat import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
